Texual Analysis for Music video "Thinking of you" by katy Perry

The music video "Thinking of you" by Katy Perry is intertexual to the war. Although the lyrics to the song does not necessarily link to that particular subject. They can be an example of someones feelings who's partner was in the war. Katy perry represents the role of a woman who's past partner has gone to the war the concept of the video shows feelings and emotions when trying to be in another relationship. The narrative of this video is a very simple love story narrative making it more interesting the fact the character has gone to war this gives people things to relate to. The beginning of the video starts with Katy looking into a mirror and placing a photo of a man dressed in army uniform this straight away shows the intentions of this music video. The mise en scene in this is very 1950's as the way Katy is dressed. The video uses constructions such as flashbacks as Katy sees her life before the male left to the army this is a very successful convention of a music video.

The genre of the music video is romance although having links to the war. This creates emotion and gets across what is wanted by the artist. The audience of this video is going to be fans of Katy perry along with her music Katy is a style icon wearing eccentric clothes and bold colours this would also attract and audience. The camera shots such as close ups are often used in romance genres as it gets across emotions successfully. The mise en scene inside the house is dark to show the sad emotion and in the flash backs the scene is bright and sunny showing she preferred her like before. The mise en scene is also very vintage and old fashioned which creates a very "perfect" scene. This video uses a narrative structure although she sings in the video she is still playing the characters role.
